Key Fobs Explained
Programming a new fob is brand-specific. Some cars allow on-board programming with a sequence of brake and ignition presses; others require a diagnostic-port tool. Fob shell replacement keeps the original electronics and just swaps the worn-out case — much cheaper than a full fob replacement. Key fobs are essentially small radios — they transmit an encrypted code to your car or building that proves authorization. Fobs fail in three ways: dead battery, broken case, or the fob loses its handshake with the receiver. The first two are repairs; the third is a reprogramming.

Push-to-start prox fobs are programmed through the OBD-II diagnostic port on most makes. We do this in your driveway. A dealer-programmed fob can cost two to four times what a locksmith charges for the identical fob and programming. Locksmith fob programming costs less because we don't have dealer overhead and we don't tow your car twenty miles. Same fob, same programming, much lower cost. Dealers charge for the showroom; we charge for the work. We use the same hardware and the same programming protocols dealers do — the savings come from labor and travel, not from cutting corners.
Battery Replacement & Diagnostics
If your fob still has a working physical key backup, a dead fob isn't a lockout — it's just an annoyance. We replace the battery and check the contacts. Battery replacement is a five-minute job and often the only repair a fob needs. We test the new battery's voltage under load before reinstalling it — a fresh battery that reads twelve percent low gets pulled and replaced. Ninety percent of fob failures are dead batteries. CR2032 or CR2025 coin cells are the standard, and we carry both.
